Old World Meets New in the Seville Collection

HIGH POINT, NC (October 2011) - With the power and strength of a bullfight, yet the grace of a flamenco dance, Marge Carson introduces the Seville Collection. This stunning 34-piece collection reflects the Spanish city's heritage of solid designs, characterized by pieces that are generous in scale but detailed with intricate wrought iron and complex carved forms. As a result, the group is bold and substantial but, at the same time, casual and refined.

Inspired by the inland seaport's rich history of trade and innovation during its "Golden Age" - Seville reaped the benefits of being at the crossroads of the Old and New Worlds, thanks to treasures found across the Atlantic by Christopher Columbus - the distinctive designs of this new collection respectfully nod to that wealthy era of the past while meeting the needs of present-day living. "The inlaid marquetry tops, combined with stone and beautiful metalwork, give this collection an easy-to-live-with casualness,"" says Mike Gohman, Director of Design for Marge Carson. "Yet it has the strength, in deep, shaped moldings accented with hand carving and bold scale, to make each item able to stand on its own."

Expertly crafted of plantation-grown white teak, the Seville Collection features two new Marge Carson finishes. "Heirloom Brentwood" is a warm brown with heavy distressing and a subtle crazing that still allows the beauty of the veneer to show through."Heirloom Merlot" is similarly antiqued but has darker red wine undertones. "Although these two new finishes were developed for this collection," Gohman notes, "Marge Carson prides itself in its variety of finishes that can transform any item to meet a customer's specific needs." He also points out that a new "Tortoise" accent finish is featured on select pieces, recognizable by its burnt gold and dark brown tortoise mottling.

There are multiple stars in this grouping, one of which is the rectangular dining table. At an impressive 124.5 inches long, it features an exquisite marquetry-patterned top made of cherry, walnut and elm veneers. But it's the delicate, hand-wrought metal flowers detailed within the wrought iron stretcher that take this piece into the realm of extraordinary. It's a prime example of the superb metalwork that's the hallmark of the Seville Collection, all designed, detailed and supervised by a master metal crafter from Italy. Each design has been superbly executed with intricate flowers and foliage that mix beautifully with contrasting elements of wood and stone.

Achieving that same star status is the 76-inch console with an inset marble top, ornately carved legs and elaborate metalwork spanning the length of the center stretcher. Likewise, a beautiful canopy bed features a wood headboard overlaid with vine-like wrought iron and delicate hand-formed metal flowers.

But in terms of detailing, the 42-inch-high credenza is beyond compare; the Madeira marble-topped storage piece features custom filigree hinges and door latches in a tumbled antique brass finish, the perfect counterpoint for the multifaceted carving that borders its top surface.

"There is a human need for a more solid foundation in our lives today, and the comfortable heritage this collection takes from the past offers that sense of stability," says Gohman. "It is like your favorite sweater and book on a rainy day. It is accessible and without pretense."
